Compass Points – New Year’s Resolutions
Guide Your Friend, M.C., Toward a Better Year.
On New Year’s eve 2022, Compass Points has scoured the web, searching Tik Tok, Facebook, YouTube, and the Home Shopping Network, to find the best ways, not just to make and stick to your own New Year’s resolutions, but to go further and help a friend with their resolutions.
Some of the advice is conflicting.
Drink more wine, help your heart. Drink less, help your liver.
Jog more, help your fitness. Jog less, help your knees.
Save more, build a cushion. Make that special purchase, you deserve it.
More generally, there seem to be five keys to setting new year’s resolutions for yourself and for guiding your friend, M.C.
1. Commit to a Better You
This is the first step. Things do not have to stay the way they are. You can be better. The people around you can be better. For example, maybe your friend, M.C. has unwisely pursued a ‘divest to invest’ approach. That is not your friend’s best self. Suggest to your friend it is time for them to stop. Encourage them to make this new year different.
2. Move in the Right Direction
It is never as important where we are right now; more important is the direction we are going. If we are going in the right direction, good things will happen. But if not, then it is time to make a change. If your friend M.C., for example, is stuck along the island chain, gently suggest that it is time to move on. It is a big world, and they need to get out, explore, and travel more broadly.
3. Stay Focused
Life is full of surprises, setbacks, and distractions. It is important to stay focused on what is most important. If your friend has lost their way chasing after fashionable innovation, just for the sake of being different, you need to tell them being fashionable is not the real goal. Much more important is staying strong, ready, and capable.
4. Stay Motivated
Everyone starts a new resolution with energy and determination, but as time goes along, it can be hard to stay motivated. If something is truly important, though, keep at it. For example, if you are determined to help your friend get on a better path, keep helping, keep encouraging. You may be having more of an effect than you know.
5. Get Help
None of us can solve every obstacle by ourselves. We are not meant to. We are meant to work together, to help each other overcome the obstacles. For example, you may need to remind your friend, M.C. that they do not have to battle alone. They should always be ready to call for help, call for air, armor, artillery, and naval gunfire!
Compass Points says, Happy New Year!
Good luck with your New Year’s resolutions.
And thanks for helping to guide our friend, M.C.
