Compass Points - Ubiquitous China
Far beyond the Pacific island chain.

For five years now the focus of the Marine Corps has turned from global, combined arms crisis response to attempting to prevent China from breaking out into the wider Pacific. The idea was that the Marine Corps would establish a line of small missile units on islands just off China's coast. China would be intimidated and deterred by the Marine missile units. In case of war, the Marine missile units would target China's naval vessels to keep China bottled up along their own coastline.
The passing of years has revealed innumerable problems with the Marine missile initiative. To list just a few issues:
-- Pacific nations do not want Marine missile units on their territory.
-- The planned Marine missile, the Navy Strike Missile, is subsonic and has a range of barely 100 nautical miles.
-- The Marines intend to launch the Navy Strike Missile using a NMESIS system that has not been fielded.
-- China is not deterred nor intimidated by the line of Marine missile units on islands off their coast because there is not one operational Marine missile unit off China's coast, must less a line of them.
-- Even if the line of Marine missile units existed, the Marine Corps has never developed the capability to support, transport, supply, and evacuate the Marines. The Marine missile units would be easily cut off and stranded.
Perhaps worst of all, however, China is not sitting back on its shoreline waiting to be bottled up by US Marine missile units. China jumped over any containment line long ago. China is no longer a regional power; it is a global power. Two examples of China’s ubiquitous global reach, which extends not just around the globe but also above it.
A recent article from Defense News warns that China is practicing to destroy US and allied satellites in orbit.

A top Space Force general said Tuesday that commercial systems have observed Chinese satellites rehearsing “dogfighting” maneuvers in low Earth orbit — the U.S. adversary’s latest show of tactical and technological advancement in space capabilities.
“With our commercial assets, we have observed five different objects in space maneuvering in and out and around each other in synchronicity and in control,” Vice Chief of Space Operations Gen. Michael Guetlein said during the McAleese Defense Programs Conference in Washington. “That’s what we call dogfighting in space. They are practicing tactics, techniques and procedures to do on-orbit space operations from one satellite to another.”

Back on earth, China is expanding its influence to every region including central and south America. Author J. Michael Waller issues an urgent warning about China's growing influence.

With Ukraine as America’s primary foreign distraction, Communist China makes quiet inroads under our southern border.
China is ready to assume indirect leadership of the Organization of American States (OAS), the 34-nation regional entity that the United States created to promote peace, stability, and security in the Americas.
Without the Trump Administration’s quick action, the OAS is poised to elect a Chinese proxy on March 10 to run the organization.
That proxy is Albert Ramdin, the foreign minister of Suriname. Ramdin has gathered the 18 votes necessary to become the next OAS secretary general.
China’s Belt and Road bought influence south of our border
For decades, taking advantage of American neglect, China has slowly made a long march through the Caribbean. OAS was a soft target.
China extended its Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) to the hemisphere. BRI involves trillions of dollars in logistical infrastructure and development, with other tools to build its own hegemony to displace the U.S.
Almost two-thirds of OAS members have signed on to BRI.

J. Michael Waller warned in his article of March 5, 2025, that if the US did not act quickly, China's preferred candidate, Suriname's Albert Ramdin would be elected head of the Organization of American States. On March 10, 2025 Albert Ramdin was elected to head the OAS. China has successful increased their influence in central and south America.
Meanwhile China is continuing to send dog fighting satellites into space to prepare to destroy US and allied satellites.
China is not just global, it is ubiquitous.
After five years and zero operational Marine missiles units on zero Pacific islands off China's coast, China is hardly intimidated nor deterred by the Marine Corps' theoretical Maginot Line of missile units.
If the Marine Corps changed is focus away from island missile units and toward global crisis response, that would be a significant help to deterring China's global ambitions. Instead of Marines units stuck on islands, what is needed is more Marines embarked on Navy ships, patrolling every ocean of the world, ready to counter China's adventurism. China may be ubiquitous, but when a Marine Air Ground Task Force arrives off a troubled shore, every friend of the US starts to celebrate, and every adversary starts to worry.

There is a great article in today's Guardian by Helen Davidson about China's new Shuqiao landing barges. Make amphibious landing possible at huge scale anywhere without beaches! A breakthrough. We should have thought of this. China's vast shipbuilding industry can build these fast, and they are building them.
