Veteran’s Day in the United States comes from Armistice Day which marked the ceasefire in World War I. The armistice began on the 11th hour, on the 11th day, on the 11th month in 1918. That is why we commemorate Veterans Day each year on the 11th of November.
World War I suffered roughly 10 million military deaths and another 10 million civilian deaths, making it one of the deadliest conflicts in human history. Canadian poet, soldier, and physician John McCrae, wrote the most famous poem to come out of the conflict. The poem starts in sorrow, but then urges that the deaths of the dead, be avenged by the living.
