FD 2030 - Dangers of Authoritarian Leadership
Poisonous Leadership Practices are Harming the Marine Corps
In his article in the National Interest (link below), retired Brigadier General Holcomb describes an authoritarian leadership approach currently harming a wide range of American institutions, including today’s US Marine Corps.
Marine Corps leadership's recent use of non-disclosure agreements and pointed lectures on loyalty are ample evidence of an authoritarian style of leadership. This runs counter to the inclusive style of leadership well respected Marine officers have long employed.
It is completely opposite of General John Archer Lejeune's understanding of leadership, which was "the sum of those qualities of intellect, human understanding, and moral character that enable a person to inspire and to control a group of people successfully."
Perhaps it is time to examine how and why harmful leadership practices, that have long been an anathema to the Corps, now appear central to the leadership approach of some of its most senior leaders.
