I believe, because of who often was at our dinner table, that both of my sons chose to become Marine Officers. They observed and absorbed. I too was gone and deployed frequently but my sons knew exactly why. Their mother bore no resentment and explained why I missed so many key events in their lives. The reason for the absence matters. The roles reversed during their combined five tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

I found that being a father and a Marine is not a conflict. They complemented each other.
