The LSM is not survivable inside the Chinese WEZ during hostilities. The LST 100 is a slow (14 kts or less), relatively unarmed, commercial ship that is not built to USN survivability standards. Those who defend it will never sail on it in harm's way. Many who defend it hide behind a pseudonym to mask their lack of military experience and/or credible operational experience.

Land based prepositiong in Subic Bay is no less problematical. Huge warehouses of supplies and equipment at known locations are easy targets for mid- to long-range precision missiles.

The SIF concept is bankrupt. Small and widely separated units, lacking firepower and mobility, are neither logistically sustainable nor survivable inside contested areas once the killing starts.

FD is obsolete! The USN Drone Fleet surpasses the mirage that Berger and Smith foisted on the Corps!

Epic Fury ! When CentCom task MarCent to be prepared to execute an Amphibious Assault on Kharg Island where was the US Code Compliant, USMC trained and equipped MEB ie Amphibious Assault Capable MAGTF? How long did it take to move into CentCom’s AOR? Was the USN able to execute their Amphibious lift mandates?

Exactly 💯... not too long ago, there were 2 MEUs forward deployed 24/7 to the Mediterranean and Western Pacific and could have been on site in the AO in days... fully SOC and able to handle any type of mission... FD2030 has ruined our MAGTF capabilities and being able to respond to any crisis in every clime and place 24/7...

In the July Gazette there is a relevant article to today's CP. The article, "A Pragmatic Expeditionary Platform" by Mr. Vince Fasone discusses a more useful ship such as a small LPD. Displacing about 12,000 tons it can carry a reinforced company, hold an LCAC, or two LCU's. It would also have four landing spots for helos, but be able to carry four choppers. One of the helo spots would be reinforced for F-35s. The ship would also have sufficient offensive and defensive weapons (modular CIWS/ SeaRAMs, and VLS spots). A ship such as a small LPD would have more capabilities than the lightly armed Damen LST. Indonesia and the Philippines operate such ships. The LST is a one trick pony platform whereas this type of ship offers a lot more.

Thanks for pointing out a great read. The fundamentals are sound. Small amphib that can do full spectrum amphibious ops for a company of Marines. 12,000 ton is also about right. After that the design has a ton of holes. Here are some basics on mine inspired as a modern day Thomaston class:

12,325 tonne full

510' LOA

84' BWL

21' draft full

Propulsion: CODELOD

2 x 20V FM PC2.5 STC 8725kw 11700hp (Same as the LSDs and LPDs except additional cylinders)

2 x 1.7 MW shaft mounted PMM (Possibly same as those from Korean FFX)

CPP, Bow Thruster

Electric: 4 x 12V FM 175D 1728-1800kw gensets

Speed: 22 max, 12.5 on electric

Range: 6700@20 / 14100@12

Well Deck: 282'Lx50'Wx27'H for 3 LCAC or 2 LCU

Capacity 375 including Marine company, surge, AvDet, and naval connectors crew

Crew: 180 accommodation (same number as the article)

Flight Deck: 178.33' x 82' w. 4 spots for MH-60/AH-1/UH-1, 2 spots for V-22, or 1 spot for H-53. Could stow 3 H-53 or V-22 with open launch spot.

Armament: 2 RAM, 2 mk 38 mod IV, CUAS box launcher, SEWIP Blk II, Nulka, Nixie, Sea Giraffe fixed face 4A/1X

Boats: 1 Port / 1 Starboard up to 12m, 14 tonne davits

Crane: 1 30 tonne

Water: 3 x 12k gpd distillers

Aviation Fuel: 39,040 (2x EPF) > 38,270 USG JP-5 for least dense fuel supporting 3 CH-53K for 2.6 sorties per day at 2.25 hr per sortie, for 3 days. Assumes CH-53K burn of 4780 lb per hour

Ships Fuel: DFM 578,085 USG

Too bad, that our active “leaders” don’t possess the intellect and energy of General Krulak, Et Al. Even a little common sense will be welcomed. Semper Fi

Yet more testimonies from proven leaders that FD2030 has been a colossal failure just in the observations about the LSMs debacle and such... FD2030 has ruined our beloved Corps MAGTF capabilities and must be reversed immediately implementing VISION2035 to save our Corps and restore our MAGTF lethality and capabilities!

Ahh you of little knowledge of how this works behind the doors….$$$$ !! no one wants to find the money to make this right! Go along to get along and use funding to fix our Corps for pet projects that benefit voters. How much will it cost to re-acquire all the operational material FD gave away? Put that number before congress and they’ll turn pale—even with the huge amounts they throw around daily, this number will shock them.

Big Country JTB's avatar

You still try to defend the FD2030 insanity??? Address the concerns of my posts and others here instead of merely repeating the past and current CMC and their criminal cohorts who did this to our Corps... FD2030 has ruined our MAGTF capabilities!

Once again, Congress is the most dysfunctional body in the US Government.

Polarbear's avatar

Yep, when you ask Congress for help there is no telling what you are going to get except a lot of delays.

Greg Falzetta's avatar

So where is the study Congress mandated be done on the Corps’s move to FD. What was it 3-4 years ago? I understand that the study is done, but HQMC is sitting on it. What Cpl., bad news? Let’s see the UNCLAS version of the report and debate that.
