Go (the game), is a contest of encirclement. What you wish to control is simply in the center...to control it, you must act in the surrounding territory. Even if China's sincere aim is regional hegemony, their strategy will require them to encircle their desired region of control militarily, economically, and politically. That means this contest is a hash of Go and the board for the game Risk...global.

I was thinking of the same thing. Risk is a game of strategy, based, initially, on forming alliances, and then growing militarily enough to start the long march to conquest. China is/has been playing the long game of risk while our country has devolved into playing short sighted games of checkers.

I've grown to see it as the United States is always playing every contest like it's poker but our representative players run the full spectrum from world champs to Friday night suckers...and we'll unexpectedly switch players on the same hand of cards.
